Your feet, ankles, knees, and hips rotate in opposite directions to act as a shock absorber when you are walking. Also, your muscles provide cushioning and supporting to ensure that the pounding of your feet hitting the ground, dissipates through your legs, pelvis, and spine.

Common ankle sprains, arch collapse and pronation of the feet can lead to the excessive rotation at the knees and less support. Needless to say, this can change the mechanical assembly of the legs. The final result is more forces are transmitted to the spinal column, which over time leads to strain and inflammation.

What can you do?

  1. You should wear supportive shoes whenever possible. Avoid wearing high heels when possible. You may need to talk to your therapist about orthotics or inserts in your shoes, depending on your bows.
  2. Keep the strong hip muscles. The weak hip muscles are changing the mechanics of your walk. It can cause tension in the back.
  3. You should use supportive shoes to walk in the house, especially if you have hard floors, such as tiles.
  4. Keep flexible, particularly in the hips and pelvis. Tight adductor muscles can pull your legs slightly across when walking, causing increased pressure inside the knee and bows.
